New Employee Profile: Gyb Spilsbury Thinks Sensible Is Just Right

by
Sensible Staff
January 22, 2019

If you’ve visited the offices of Sensible Financial Planning lately, you may have noticed a new face among the bricks and artwork. Gyb Spilsbury, a recent graduate of Union College in New York, started as an Associate Financial Advisor on October 1st. Sensible’s newest team member is enjoying his new position and his new city. A New Hampshire native, Gyb grew up in Charlestown and attended Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire.

Gyb got his Bachelor’s in the interdepartmental major of economics and political science. He also studied economics abroad at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, traveling all over Europe whenever he could. In college, Gyb participated in the investment club, Greek life, and was on the rowing team. He also interned at Colley Asset Management in Saratoga Springs, New York and as an intern at the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.

After graduation, Gyb figured he’d join most of his classmates and work in New York City after college, but then he met Rick Miller and learned about Sensible Financial. Gyb was instantly attracted to Sensible’s philosophy, size, and methods. During the year-long interview process, Gyb met the entire Sensible team, visited their office, and had conversations about how they did business. “While researching other companies, I found tiny two-person firms and huge corporations, but medium-sized Sensible is perfect. And their method of smoothing consumption over the course of a client’s life really appeals to me.”

Gyb also likes the firm’s practice of assigning a team to each client. “Rick Miller assigns two financial advisors to every client. It’s a great system. There’s always a highly experienced person on each team so a junior advisor —like me— is both learning and contributing from the beginning. The client also benefits because they get two sets of eyes on their portfolio.”

Gyb’s family is scattered all over New England, except his younger brother, Duncan, who’s a student at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. Since he’s moved to Boston, Gyb has spent his off time exploring the area with friends, riding his bike, and watching sports — he’s a Pats fan!

Gyb is happy to be at Sensible. “To be honest, when I was in school, I didn’t really know what jobs existed in the real world. Then, I spoke to Rick Miller about Sensible and I remember thinking, yes! I want to be here.”
