Laura Higgins: From Maps to Markets

by
Sensible Staff
July 31, 2019

The team at Sensible Financial is an eclectic bunch. Some started as academics, some as attorneys, and one, like the latest member of the Sensible team, Laura Higgins, began her professional life studying geography. Though she didn’t map out a career as a financial planner, Laura recently started working at Sensible as an Associate Financial Advisor.

After graduating from Salem State with a B.S. in Geography, Laura worked at American Express in Boston. She spent the next few years at State Street working with high-volume equity accounts, mergers, and stock splits for mutual funds. She also earned her M.B.A. in General Finance from Bentley University’s McCallum Graduate School of Business. At about this time, Laura became interested in the field of financial planning.

Making the jump from the corporate to the non-profit world, Laura spent the next year at City Year as a financial analyst. After City Year, she began work at the Museum of Science, Boston, as a grant accountant, managing federal, state, corporate, and foundation funded grants to ensure legal and regulatory compliance. She later served as Finance and Operations Manager, establishing a new sales system to provide more data and further transparency.

Laura left the MoS and made the decision to fulfill her earlier ambition to become a financial planner, completing her CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) courses at Boston University and passing the exam. She next worked as a paraplanner at Shepherd Financial Partners.

In May of 2019, Laura joined the Sensible Financial team as an Associate Financial Advisor.

When she’s not busy with clients or consulting with colleagues, Laura and her husband, Tim, spend their free time hiking. They’ve hiked 47 of the 48 4000-footers in New Hampshire, along with mountain trails in the Teton and Sawtooth Ranges in Wyoming and Idaho. They also enjoy listening to live music at the Lizard Lounge and other local haunts.

After beginning her career on a different path, Laura brings years of experience in finance, accounting, investments, and business to Sensible Financial, and we are pleased to welcome her to our team.
