Avoiding Social Security Pitfalls in Divorce

by Sensible Staff
August 12, 2021

Last month, Frank Napolitano, Senior Financial Advisor, presented the webinar Social (In)security: How to Avoid Social Security Pitfalls in Divorce, to the Ilumni Institute. The webinar began with an introduction by Laurel Starks, Ilumni’s founder and president. The full webinar, which is approximately one hour long, is available below.

What Is the Ilumni Institute?

The Ilumni Institute is a professional organization of family law attorneys and real estate agents who specialize in divorce. The organization offers a wide range of educational opportunities to its members, including a regular Raising the Bar series, which provides CLE (continuing legal education) to attorneys, and a Certified Divorce Real Estate (CDRE) Master Course Program for real estate agents.

Frank’s webinar covers the issue of Social Security benefits for divorced spouses. Often, divorcing couples don’t realize Social Security is a potentially large benefit for them. It’s available to divorced spouses in certain cases, but the rules are complex. Frank illustrates the importance of Social Security and its impact on the lifetime balance sheet, which we’ve written about previously here. After the presentation, many of the more than 100 attendees asked questions and interacted with Frank during the Q&A.

Frank’s main goals for the webinar are to:

  • Demonstrate how a Lifetime Balance Sheet provides important insights into a household’s lifetime finances
  • Illustrate the long-term impact that divorce has on a household’s finances
  • Show how Social Security, many Americans’ largest asset, can help mitigate the negative impact of divorce for eligible ex-spouses

Frank Napolitano writes about divorce, Social Security benefits, and the Lifetime Balance Sheet in articles like:
