Every firm has strengths and weaknesses. Our strong suits are financial planning and investment advice for individuals and married couples. We are happy to try to help in any situation, but we recognize that many situations call for specialized skills that other firms may have in greater measure than we do.
It is to your advantage to select an advisor who is knowledgeable about the issues you face and the questions you want to answer. Such an advisor will be most likely to produce a good solution for you at a reasonable price.
We intend the following questions and answers to provide you with some guidance about whether we are likely to be the right advisor for you.
We know we haven’t addressed every question – please contact us directly if you don’t see your issue on the list.
- I (we) have only a small amount of investable assets – they don’t seem to meet Sensible Financial’s minimums for asset management. Can Sensible Financial help?
We are happy to help you regardless of your amount of assets – no amount of assets is too small. We base our minimums on our costs, and on our belief that no one should pay more than 1% of assets for asset management services.
If you want advice as you begin an investment program, we offer a targeted consultation to establish an asset allocation and to select specific investments to implement the allocation. For example, in just one hour, we can usually help you select specific investments for your 401(k) or 403(b) plan and some additional accounts to match your return target and comfort with risk. Then, every year or two, as you feel you need support, we can meet to see how it’s going. As your portfolio grows, you can decide to retain us for continuous investment monitoring and management, if you wish.
- I'm in serious debt. Can you help someone like me?
We are not experienced credit counselors. We would refer you to National Credit Counselors or Not-For-Profit Credit Counselors, both of which have excellent reputations. In addition, several of our fellow NAPFA members are very capable in this area. To find them, browse to www.napfa.org.
- We are a committed unmarried couple. Can you help us?
Married couples enjoy significant legal benefits that unmarried couples do not. Some committed unmarried couples attempt to capture some of these benefits by constructing a set of agreements and contracts. There are lawyers and planners who specialize in this area. We do not. Pride Planners (www.prideplanners.com) specializes in helping committed and married gay couples.
We can and do work with members of committed couples as individual clients, and with committed couples who intend to marry. In addition, we are pleased to work with committed couples who can arrange to address the legal issues independently.
